Remembering Benjamin Bayles in our continuing quest for social justice

This is a remembrance of Benjamin Bayles, a martyr of the Iglesia Filipin Independiente. The lay leader from the Diocese of Negros Occidental and advocate of peasants’ rights was slain on June 14, 2010. In March, nearly 12 years after, the court finally decided on his case: The two suspects caught by authorities after the incident were guilty of murder.

In this interview with Atty. Edre Olalia of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, we learn more about Bayles and his case. We also seek updates on the state of peasants for whom Bayles fought, and the hardships human rights defenders and social justice advocates face today.
